From The Pastor’s Desk:
As February rolls in, we are still in the Season After Epiphany. So, what
is actually the Season After Epiphany? To quote PCUSA.org, “Epiphany is
the celebration of God’s manifestation or self-revelation to the world in
Jesus Christ. In particular, we celebrate the revelation of God’s promise
and purpose to the nations of the world, as the magi came from the East to
worship to the Christ child, and God’s covenant of grace is extended to all
who believe the good news of Christ Jesus. The symbolism of light is
important: not only because of the star that guided the magi, but as it
relates to the bright dawning of God’s self-revelation in Christ.”
Think of this as the In-between time, in between Epiphany (January 6) at
the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday (March 5). We will continue with
readings which focus on the early days of Jesus’ ministry as people begin
to notice him, listen to him, and follow him. Since it is Year C- we will hear
the stories from the Gospel of Luke. Luke’s Gospel emphasizes social
justice and Inclusion. Luke highlights Jesus’ concern for the marginalized.
Luke also includes stories and parables that feature women, giving them
important roles in Jesus’ ministry. Luke emphasizes God’s love for all
people.
May be, the Gospel of Luke is exactly the Gospel we need to be hearing
from at this time. Let us remember who and what we stand for and those
we need to care for. Let us remember to whom we belong. Let us do
God’s work in this world.
